Seiko isn’t trying to beat the Europeans at their own game, Seiko rather wants to be noticed as being included in the game. They have a sufficient level of technical innovation, artistic beauty, manufacturing prowess, skilled watch makers, and customer credibility to be considered on the same playing field with the luxury Swiss and German brands (less as “the Japanese alternative”).

Platinum Speedmaster Professional Apollo XI 40th Anniversary | Fratellowatches

Last March I was very intrigued by the marketing images of this new Roger Dubuis Easy Diver SED Tourbillon watch with its intense level of skeletonization, in carbon fiber, that looked like tree branches. If you look closely, you can tell that the movement is barley even there. The biggest parts are the one minute flying tourbillon and the mainspring. Surprisingly, the manually wound Roger Dubuis caliber RD 02 SQ3 movement has a 60 hour power reserve (movement bears the Seal of Geneva). One thing that I want to make clear is that the "branches" of the movement are done in carbon fiber - which now makes it clear what you are looking at. I've never seen anything like this before. Like other models in the Easy Diver line, the watch has other carbon fiber sections built in, such as here seen on the sides of the lugs.

Using the winder is easy. There is a foam brick and the actual unit that winds the watch. The unit itself removes from the winder body, but you technically don't ever need to remove it. The option is there to help with inserting and removing watches. Look on the back of the winding unit and you see the RotorWind weight. This is a hint as to how the unit works, which is different than most watch winders of this type. The system is really clever actually and I quite like it. The Sparta 1 Mini uses a low power motor to slowly turn the winding unit. The whole process takes 5-10 minutes ans is virtually silent. Once the winding unit gets to a specific point, the motor releases and the weight in the winding unit pull the unit down and the momentum of the travel distance propels the winding unit (with the watch in it) back and forth a few times that enables the automatic rotor inside of the watch to spin in both directions. This action creates the force that mimics your wrist's movement and winds the watch (regardless of the direction that the rotor needs to spin to wind the movement). The system is good for almost all automatic watches, and my experience is that watches I have tested with the Sparta 1 Mini stay well wound. So what you have is a clever system that uses very low amounts of power and is basically silent. It is also safe for the watches which is a necessary part of the equation.

Let me tell you about the newest and (coolest) new method that a luxury watch company is using technology to help prevent anyone making replica, counterfeit or fake watches from the brand. I don't always know why companies care so much about this, but it is true that as time goes on, fake watches are getting better. In an ideal world, there will be a simple and fool proof way to tell if a watch is authentic right away, from looking at the watch itself. We are not there yet. While this newest method (as applied to watches) is interesting, it still needs improvement as you need the paper work that comes with the watch to authenticate the timepiece. Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose as someone who is cunning enough is just going to match a questionable watch with real paper work? Maybe Parmigiani will figure out how to incorporate the system into the watches themselves.

I like the style of the bracelet even though it is pretty "old school." It still looks good, and retro reminders are cool. It is comfortable and uses butterfly style deployment clasp. While the watch fits on me well, I would have liked there to be a half link (smaller size link that can be removed for more precise sizing) on the bracelet because I appreciate when a company wants everyone to have the most comfortable fit possible with their watches on their wrist. The Japanese are probably the best when it comes to creating watch bracelets with a ton of minute size adjustments, something the rest of the watch world should look at closely.

Photo Report Of An Omega Speedmaster GTG in Holland

Now on to the screen and functions. There are four displays that you can choose to look at, and each in either the positive or negative color tone. What I mean by the latter is that by pressing the right pusher on the watch in any screen will juxtapose the colors. For instance if the numbers are dark, and the background is light, press the button and the numbers before light, and the background dark. The four screens show: 1) the time with stacked hours and minutes,  a calendar with stacked date and month, the alarm setting, and an alternative time display with a semi-analog hour on top of digital minutes. The watch also has an adjustable tone that will beep on each hour, but this can be turned off. The pushers are easy to use, but require a deep push into the case. A few downsides to e-ink are that there is no current backlight option, and there are no seconds indication available. Both are understandable given the nature of the screen, and are not merely left out of the design. e-Ink needs energy each time the screen "changes." If the watch were to count seconds, the screen would need to change each second, and thus use up too much energy. This way it only needs to change each minute. e-Ink does require a bit more voltage than a standard LCD display, but with the CR2025 battery, you should get 18-24 months of battery life. Plus, these types of batteries shouldn't be hard to find at non-watch stores as they are also used in non watch devices.

The interesting screws all over the case help emphasis the tool like function of the watch having more water resistance. I like both the rubber straps and metal bracelets equally. More than a few times playing with the watch I have been tempted to get it - very appealing watch when all the elements are taken together. The images you see are from TheWatchGallery.co.uk that is an authorized Tag Heuer watch dealer. They have been taking watches are photographing them in 360 degree angles - so you can see the watch from all side. These are images of the watches themselves. Not mere marketing shots. They have the whole line of Tag Heuer Aquaracer watches available, and you can visit the site to see the whole line and compare them.

I like the screen and its layout. There is something 80s futuristic about it, or maybe I am just seeing things. Either way it is a nice look with the cool orange moon phase display. Which brings me to the many nice features that the G-Rescue watch has. It has a moon phase indicator, tide chart, two 1/100th of a second stopwatches, four alarms (with snooze and I think a flashing light), it is a world timer, a calendar, and the time of course (in 12 and 24 hour format). You can get the watch is three charming colors. I like them all frankly (even been getting interested in white watches as of late. They look fun). Black, white, and red toned are the options. The red version really looks like a fireman's watch. More so that other red watches. Price is very reasonable at each. Casio is probably one of the highest value digital watches out there.... which explains why they can sell them by the boat load. The Casio G-Rescue watches should be available soon.

While these Swatch Automatic Chrono watches aren't the first mechanical Swatch watches, they are of the first with this new ETA C01.211 automatic mechanical chronograph movement that is based on the classic Lemania 5100. The movement was designed to be durable, accurate, and not too expensive to make. Like the original Lemania 5100, the new C01.211 has some plastic pieces in the movement - but those should have no negative effect on its durability or functionality in the long run. All the important parts of in metal of course. See some of them in what looks to be brass. However, the escapement is in some fancy synthetic material. Overall the movements are comprised of 184 parts, have a 46 hour power reserve, and feature the time, date, and a 6 hour chronograph. In the back of the watch you can view the movement through a mostly semi-opaque crystal window, with two clear areas for where a particular gear is, and above the escapement. The movement is interesting with a large sized automatic rotor. The cloudy glass look of the caseback is likely meant to distract from much of the movement that is not really decorated. It is an interesting approach.

I have been fascinated with this Breguet watch model since I wrote an article on Luxist a while ago about how it was seen on the wrist of Russian president Dmitri Medvedev. By the way, the above image is from Antiquroum via this webpage here. You can blame Breuget for not having enough images of their watches floating around the internet. So you probably know that Breuget is the king of "old school" watch brands. The love of Swatch Group kingpin (Chairman) Nicolas Hayek, and founder way back when by the father of modern watch making. Abraham Louis Breguet himself. The brand keeps mulling forth with classic watch creations that refuse to modernize - and that is a good thing.

Inside the watch is the Omega calibre 3313 Co-Axial escapement automatic movement that has been Chronometer certified. The watch is a big 44mm wide, with enough bling appeal for those who like the Omega name, and those who like the Omega functionality. I like the contrast between the brushed metal bracelet and the polish on the bezel and part of the case. Rolex like to have more polish on its models with gold, but Omega is trying to subdue this a bit. Like the GMT model that I discussed a few days ago, the watch also have gold hour markers and hands that have been diamond polished. The watch is also water resistant to 150 meters.

Chronograph Watches For Those Who Love Detail

Using the movement is nice. The crown makes a bit of an odd noise when you use it for winding, but it feels like it is contacting the gears securely. Operating the watch is simple, and the chronograph pushers have a secure, if not heavy feel to them. The 6 hour chronograph works just as expected. Overall the movement feels a lot like a slightly less expensive version of the Valjoux 7750, which it essentially is from a hierarchy perspective. There are certainly no 7750 based watches at this price. Pictured is an ETA C01.211 movement, but with a Tissot logo (which is also a Swatch Group brand).

Seiko Izul, The Coolest Watch You've Never Heard Of (And Can't Get) Watch Releases

It goes without saying that Project X Designs is not affiliated to Rolex in anyway. Their operation takes mostly brand new Rolex watches and puts them metaphorically under the knife for enhancement. As I have said before, companies like Project X take a good product and makes it arguably better as an aftermarket value-added retailer. Consider them like a tuner for fine automobiles. A Mercedes Benz, BMW, or Porsche are stellar right out of the factory. Though the enthusiast might want any number of modifications to make their vehicle more unique. This might involve adding new wheels or even enhancing the engine. No matter how small or large the changes are, they are fulfilling and something that the factory itself does not offer.
